The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published interim guidance for implementing safety practices for critical infrastructure workers who may have had exposure to a person with COVID-19.
According to the CDC, in order to ensure continuity of operations, critical infrastructure workers may be permitted to continue working following potential exposure to COVID-19, provided they remain asymptomatic and additional precautions are implemented to protect them and the community.
The CDC recommends that employers:
- Measure the employee’s temperature and assess symptoms prior to them starting work
- Clean and disinfect all areas routinely
- Send sick employees home immediately
- Compile information on persons who had contact with the ill employee during the time the employee had symptoms and two days prior to symptoms
The CDC recommends that critical infrastructure workers who have had an exposure but remain asymptomatic:
- Self-monitor their symptoms
- Wear a face mask at all times in the workplace for 14 days
- Practice social distancing
